Bruce Mandeville is a true all-round athlete. At age 13, Bruce first discovered three day eventing,
training with Canadian Olympian Nick-Holmes-Smith. Also a competitive skier, Bruce was British
Columbia slalom champion as a teenager.
Following high school, Bruce abandoned sports to pursue his studies. He earned three French
diplomas from Université Sorbonne in Paris. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce and his law
degree from the University of British Columbia.
It didn't take long however before Bruce returned to his true love of riding. In the first half of
the 90's, Bruce had great success with Hitman, a horse that was discovered purely by accident. He
found the horse in 1990 when he escaped from the farm of his owner. Recognizing him as a well-bred
horse, Bruce took the Kentucky-born thoroughbred in for schooling and was competing with him by
1991. Following a 14th place finish in the 1994 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event, Bruce and Hitman
travelled to the 1994 World Equestrian Games in the Hague, Netherlands, for their first competition
outside North America.
In 1997, Bruce finished second and seventh in May's CCI** Essex Horse Trials in Gladstone, New
Jersey. Although the 1998 season was cut short when Bruce broke his leg, he came back in top form
to finish 11th at the 1999 Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event with the Trakehner mare, Larissa. The
placing qualified them for a spot on the Canadian Team at the 1999 Pan American Games, where they
were Canada’s top-placed combination, finishing ninth overall.
In 2000, Larissa made the voyage to Syndey, Australia to the Olympic Games 2000. There she placed
22nd with one of only five clean stadium jumping rounds. In recognition of her participation in
the Games, the American Trakehner Association awarded Larissa a $10,000 prize for North
American-bred Trakehner.
In 2001, Larissa was again the top placed Canadian horse at the CCI**** Rolex Three Day Event,
placing 14th.
In 2002 Larissa, repeated her performance as the highest placed Canadian horse, this time at the
World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain. She finished in 29th place out of 80 horses with a clean
cross-country.
In 2002 Bruce Mandeville riding Rose Tremière placed 5th at the CCI *** Fox Hall Cup in
Douglasville, GA. Rose is now short-listed for the Canadian Team.
